Writing the Strong…and the Unsung

Everyone, it seems, wants a hero. Someone strong, that take-charge kind of person who can stride into any situation, assess it, and then divvy out justice. The alpha-alpha, if you will.

But what about the less-forthcoming alphas? I’ll call them the unsung heroes. Know anybody like that? I sure do. Work with plenty of them, male and female both. They know when to keep their heads down, but if someone comes along and tips the apple cart for their friends or family? Look out.

When it came time to write book three in my Checkerberry Inn series, I wanted a different kind of hero to pair with their chef Maddie Frye. She, like so many of us, hides her insecurities behind a Teflon exterior, one reinforced with plenty of sarcasm. If I’d sent a typical alpha male into her culinary domain, she’d have chewed him up and spit him out by page three. (Heck, she’d done that to Miles Masterson the first time they met, and he was about as smooth as they come!)

But who to send?

How about a damaged alpha, one who’s been wronged enough to recognize others who’ve been hurt as well? Someone unassuming and sincere, but guarded when necessary. Enter Cole Granville. And oh, he was perfect for Maddie. As characters go, they just clicked. (And trust me when I say, relationships like that make writing a whole lot easier on me! lol)

Sure, I love reading about alphas that command attention as soon as they step foot in a room—especially that of their future heroines. But sometimes as a reader, it’s nice to see a different kind of hero get their HEA. The kind of hero we pass by on the street or in the office, in the grocery store or at the gym, keeping to themselves but always looking out for others. The kind that make this world a better place without us realizing it, every single day.

The unsung kind.

Hopefully, you enjoy reading about them too.
