Making Trouble for Your Favorite Characters … the messier, the better!

With: Clare James

Congratulations to "Collen C.", the winner in Clare's giveaway. Thank you to all who participated!

I love putting my characters into crazy situations, just to see how they get themselves out of it. And I’m offering a giveaway to show you what I mean, so read on!

Yep, I’ll admit it. I’m a sucker for the uncomfortable, the outlandish, the shocking and surprising, in both my books and in my characters. I enjoy reading these scenes, but more importantly, I love writing them. You know, those pages that make readers squirm (in a good way!), or gasp, or have their hearts pounding in their chests, or yelling at the characters? That tickles me to no end.

Part of what we do as writers, especially in romance, is find ways to keep our hero and heroine apart. Even more fun? Finding ways to get them together. It’s an addictive dance that, I believe, makes romance novels so entertaining.

In my Elite PR series, the opportunities to make trouble for my characters were endless. After all, it’s about women in public relations trying to get their male clients out of sticky situations. (I also adore stories where the women do the saving, but that’s another blog post for another time.)

I’ve personally spent many years working in public relations, and it always amazed me how sports figures, actors, music artists, politicians, and the like, found themselves in embarrassing situations with such regularity. And though my stories don’t cover any actual cases, they certainly could have.

Take Jarod Cage in my book Caught. He has the world in the palm of his hand. Gorgeous, wealthy, and on track to make it to car racing’s biggest honor… The Sprint Cup. Until a certain video goes viral and puts his entire career at risk. This is where our heroine, Vivian Blake, comes in. But don’t worry, she gets herself into plenty of trouble as well.
Here’s a look Vivian’s first introduction to her new client:

Though she was watching the X-rated bathroom romp from her iPad—in the privacy of her own home—it didn’t stop the heat from spreading over her chest, up her neck and face, to the tips of her ears. She felt downright pervy watching the footage. The surprisingly clear footage. Yeah, she could see everything. This was no shady production. The picture was clear and sharp, damn near HD.  She sank a little deeper under her covers, the cool, crisp sheets brushing against her sensitive skin.

The tendons in the man’s arms bulged as he held Blondie up, cradling her thighs. It was one of the hottest things she had ever seen. And we were talking arms. Once she locked in on his face? Forget about it. The camera was placed overhead so the angle provided Viv with an excellent view of that rugged mug. Piercing blue eyes, strong jaw with the perfect amount of stubble, and plump kissable lips that he used to his full advantage as he brought this unnamed woman to the brink of ecstasy in a bar bathroom.

The guy, however, had a name. A name worth millions. Mr. Bathroom Stall Sex Guy was better known as racing sensation Jarod Cage. And he was a foolish, foolish man.

A sexy category romance from Entangled’s Brazen imprint…

She was hired to clean up his image. He wants nothing more than to get her dirty.

Watching sex tapes at the office is just part of PR professional Vivian Blake’s job, especially when she has to clean up a celebrity’s image. Except that her newest client isn’t quite that easy. Racecar driver Jarod Cage is beyond hot, and his onscreen “performance” is already compromising Viv’s cool professionalism.

While Jarod hasn’t exactly been discreet about his personal life, he never thought his reputation could cost him both his sponsor and his racing career. Now he has to put his future in the hands of a tiny, pixie-like publicist. Which is becoming a problem, because the heat between them is about to redline. But when you go this hard and fast, putting on the brakes is the most dangerous thing you can do…

I might be looking for another hero to mess with in this series—maybe a politician, an actor, rockstar, or famous foodie. Who would you like to read about?  Let us know in the comments below for a chance to win your choice of one of Clare’s ebooks.

  1. Since Caught was such an amazing read and I have a massive love for all things racing. I would love to read something about a sexy tattooed motocross racer from the wrong side of the tracks and a female mechanic that gets her dream job of working for Honda or Suzuki that just happens to be his team. Throw in a crazy ex girlfriend or boyfriend and someone out to sabotage his career and you'll have me sold!

  2. not sure
