I was eavesdropping the other day. Yep, I’ve got no concept of social etiquette. But in my defense, I was standing at the end of a very, very long coffee line, and I couldn’t play Candy Crush because my phone was dead, so listening in on the most awkward date ever was the best way to amuse myself.
From what I could glean, this couple had spoken online a few times, and were now meeting in person for the first time. It was at Starbucks, and I applaud them for picking a public place where neither one of them was likely to get murdered. Now, I meet lots of interesting people when I’m out in the world. A lot of the time I’ll have conversations that are so funny or ridiculous that I end up using them in a book.
But this conversation was brutal.
He talked to her about asphalt for a bit. Yes. Asphalt. He had a summer job paving driveways, and he was happy to explain every detail of the paving process to this woman. At one point, he told a cringe-worthy joke that made me sad—she commented on how deep and gravelly his voice is, and he said something like “well, sometimes the driveways are gravel so it gets into my voice.” She laughed very awkwardly.
She wasn’t a sparkling conversationalist either, though. She told him about how she reorganized the file cabinets in her office because there were so many S’s that she had to shift around all the files. He seemed very interested in this.
Needless to say, I will not be using any part of this flirt fest in a book, but it did make me realize just how hard it is to flirt. Maybe it’s easier when you’ve had something to drink, or if you’re at a nightclub or bar where everyone is already there to get laid? Either way, this awkward date of the century got me thinking about how much I love writing about people flirting, because the reality isn’t always as fun and sassy.
The characters in my books are all about sarcasm and fast-paced banter, which is a blast to write. And, honestly, it’s pretty much the way I talk in real life. But I have been in situations where guys don’t realize I’m being sarcastic, or their “banter” is really just them negging me or arguing in a way they think is cute, but it’s totally not. The heroes in my books don’t have this problem. They always know exactly what to say, and their sense of humor is awesome and not at all cringe worthy. Even when they’re jerks, there’s still something endearing about them.
Sometimes I really wish I lived in a romance novel, but there’s something to be said for awkward, real-life moments like this. I’m already trying to figure out a way to write Asphalt and File Cabinet into a future book—as side characters, of course. Because I’m pretty sure that if my hero and heroine were on a date, they’d have a lot more interesting things to say!
