Thanks to Just Contemporary Romance for putting a spotlight on GIFTS OF HONOR, the military homecoming-themed holiday duology releasing tomorrow, November 21st! The two authors of the duology, Rebecca Crowley and Stacy Gail, are ready to share some insight into the creations of their novellas, HERO’S HOMECOMING and STARTING FROM SCRATCH.

Rebecca Crowley, HERO’S HOMECOMING

My hometown – and the setting for HERO’S HOMECOMING – is called Manhattan, Kansas. Too ridiculous to be believed, right? Supposedly the early settlers expected it to become the New York City of the Midwest. That didn’t turn out to be the case, although it does still boast the nickname, ‘The Little Apple’.

With such a distractingly silly name, I thought I’d never be able to write a romance about my hometown – until I read Carina Press’s call for military-themed holiday novellas. Manhattan sits just down the highway from Fort Riley, home to the famous 1st Infantry Division, aka the Big Red One.  I grew up with live tank fire rattling the windows and military-brat friends PCSing in and out, and I knew this was my opportunity to write about one of my favorite places in the world – my own little corner of northeastern Kansas.

Living in the shadow of a military installation brings the reality of war to the home front, from standing behind uniformed men in the checkout line at Target to reading Fort Riley’s most recent killed-in-action list in the local newspaper. HERO’S HOMECOMING is my humble effort to capture that fraught coexistence – and the awe-inspiring love that can spring out of it.

Author Bio: Rebecca Crowley inherited her love of romance from her mom, who taught her to at least partially judge a book by the steaminess of its cover. She writes contemporary romance with smart heroines and swoon-worthy heroes, and never tires of the happily-ever-after. Having pulled up her Kansas roots to live in New York City and London, Rebecca recently relocated to Johannesburg, South Africa.

When Carina Press put out a call for military homecoming-themed holiday novellas, I almost didn’t do it.  I was in the middle of another project, so there was no way I’d be able to make the deadline. Nuh-uh. Forget it.

Sadly, my brain had other ideas. I’ve got a friend whose Marine husband suffered a traumatic brain injury almost ten years ago, and I’ve always been in awe of her inner strength.  So, when this submission call came up, the writer in me insisted I put my admiration for the spouses of our troops down into the form of a story.

STARTING FROM SCRATCH is about a second chance at love, but in my mind I wanted to put a spotlight on the enduring strength of those who keep the home fires burning.  Friends and family of those who serve deserve a HUGE pat on the back for the sacrifices they make on a daily basis, and it’s my hope that this comes through in Lucy and Sully’s story. And to the families who have loved ones in the military, you have my eternal thanks and admiration.
Author Bio: A competitive figure skater from the age of eight, Stacy Gail began writing stories in between events to pass the time. By the age of fourteen, she told her parents she was either going to be a figure skating coach who was also a published romance writer, or a romance writer who was also a skating pro. Now with a day job of playing on the ice with her students, and writing everything from steampunk to cyberpunk, contemporary to paranormal at night, both dreams have come true.
