When people I meet learn that I’m a writer, this is the way the conversation usually goes:
“You write romance? I don’t know how you do it. I’d run out of ideas.”
Or the alternative question is:
“Where do you get your ideas?”
Now most writers will say that ideas are everywhere, and others—the smart-ass ones—might say they buy their ideas in bulk from K-mart.
The truth is that most writers put snippets of themselves into their books and draw on their life experiences when they’re writing. This is true of me.
You’ll find that many of my characters—male and female—are capable cooks because I love to cook and try new recipes. (One Night of Misbehavior, Scarlet Woman)
My feminine characters like to drink margaritas or wine (The Bottom Line, Past Regrets)
Some of my characters live in small country towns (Middlemarch Mates series, Talking Dogs series) since my father owns a farm, while other characters live and work in the city of Auckland (The Bottom Line, Past Regrets)
I love sports and watching rugby. In a different time I think I would have played rugby myself instead of watching from the sidelines. (Playing to Win, Issy’s Infatuation, The Bottom Line)
The majority of my characters like casual clothes and jeans, but they dress up for the odd night out. (One Night of Misbehavior, Summer in the City of Sails)
My heroines enjoy reading and they read romances in public places. (The Bottom Line, One Night of Misbehavior)
My characters love travel or their stories are set in places I’ve visited. (Cat Burglar in Training, Wanderlust, Lone Wolf)
And I have a new pink handbag that I adore. (Julia in my upcoming release Past Regrets)
Now, some of you might be nodding, and a few of you might be thinking, but Shelley writes erotic romance. What about the sexy times?
Well, this is where I say…you didn’t think I’d admit to everything, did you?
CONTEST: Answer the following question, complete the rafflecopter and go into a draw to win an Amazon Gift certificate (Contest closes Sep. 14th). Why do you like reading contemporary romances?
Never look back…unless that’s where your heart belongs.
Julia Maxwell was a seize-the-moment party girl until the night she spent with up-and-coming rocker Ryan Callander. From that moment, she was a one-man woman. Pity he hasn’t kept with the program.
Tired of the secrets that have kept her out of the press and Ryan’s fans happy, angry with mounting evidence of infidelity, Julia is older, wiser, and determined to divorce his cheatin’ ass.
Ryan’s long European tour had more than its share of hard knocks—one of which landed on his head when he was mugged. Divorce papers waiting for him at home are a shock that fills in some of the holes in his sketchy memory. But it could be too late to salvage his marriage.
If Ryan thinks flirtatious smiles, seductive touches, and hot-and-heavy kisses are going to smooth things over, Julia’s got a hammer with his name on it. To her surprise, he picks it up, determined to rebuild a bright future for both of them. But the past is lurking with some missing pieces that could bring their hearts crashing down.
Warning: Contains a pissed ex-stripper turned burlesque dancer, a bunch of nosy friends and a smooth-talking rocker with one thing on his mind. Stripper poles and skimpy costumes may be involved.
