Wiley Sharpe—My Kind of Hero

Before I begin, I’d like to give a shout-out to Maureen of Just Contemporary Romance.  Thank you so much for allowing me to talk about my latest release from Carina Press, UGLY DUCKLINGS FINISH FIRST. You rock, Maureen! :)

Confession: I have a crush.  A ridiculously huge fangirl crush on a book boyfriend… that I made up. *blush*  It’s probably all kinds of twisted to feel that way about your own creation, right?  The thing is, I write about what attracts me, and the hero of Ugly Ducklings Finish First, Wiley Sharpe, trips my trigger in a BIIIIIIG way. Heh.

Let’s start off shallow and describe the yummy outer shell, aka, his appearance. ;)  Blond hair, green eyes and a killer smile with dimples.  Uh-huh, I added dimples (you’re welcome :D).  He’s got a rangy, athletic build and though he’s usually very busy as a small town family attorney, for fun he likes to play one of my favorite sports, basketball.  When he was younger, he was voted Most Likely To Be Slapped With a Paternity Suit.

But like I said, that’s the shallow part of Wiley.  What I truly love about him is that he’s always had a soft spot for former nerd and ugly duckling, Payton Pruitt.

To understand the depth of Wiley’s character, you have to first understand that the heroine, Payton, was terribly bullied while in high school.  It was uncool to even be seen in the hallways with her.  But Wiley, whom Payton tutored, discovered there was an amazing person hidden under the frizzy hair, glasses and braces. He defended her when no one else would, and cherished the fact that he was trusted enough to be her friend.

That was then.  This is now.

It’s time for their ten-year high school reunion, and both Wiley and Payton have unresolved issues.  When they meet at last, the connection they shared in the past is now so powerful it could light up all of Texas, and both are willing to see how far it can go. But Wiley’s feelings for Payton aren’t there because she’s the epitome of an ugly duckling who grew into a swan.  Those feelings are there because he treasured the beautiful person she was inside all along.

See? Told you he was perfect. :)

QUESTION: What’s your idea of the perfect hero?

Metal Mouth. Queen Geek. Dr. Payton Pruitt heard it all growing up. But she’s over it, and attending her ten-year high school reunion is the perfect way to prove it to herself. Even if there’s only one person she’s interested in seeing in Bitterthorn, Texas: Wiley Sharpe.

Now a respected lawyer, Wiley didn’t live down to the label Most Likely to Be Slapped with a Paternity Suit. But recent acts of vandalism suggest someone still sees him as a heartbreaker, and the reunion seems a likely place to find the culprit. Instead, Wiley comes face-to-face with his old pal Payton—and is wowed not only by her transformation into a ravishing swan, but by the connection they still share.

Payton is pleased the playboy she used to tutor has grown into an honorable man, but she’s too smart to fall for a guy with roots in a place she couldn’t wait to leave. But while Payton is an academic genius, Wiley is the one with the PhD in pleasure, and he intends to use it to convince her to stay…
